Avant, il n’y avait rien, ni papier, ni stylo, ni ligne. Un vendredi de mai 1994, si ma mémoire est bonne, j’étais en réunion avec la section de la société dont je faisais partie à l’époque. Cette même société annonçait, simultanément, de grandes célébrations pour un anniversaire important et la suppression de 30% des emplois. Cela m’a mis sérieusement en colère. Quand j’ai dit à mon chef de section, qui présidait la réunion et qui se reconnaîtra s’il lit ces lignes, que ces annonces n’étaient pas admissibles, il m’a répondu, en anglais : « Gilles, personne ne te retient. Si tu n’es pas content, la porte est ouverte. » Pas content je l’étais mais je n’ai pas pris la porte. En réunion, j’ai dessiné les deux dessins que je reproduis ici. Je n’avais jamais dessiné à tendance humoristique avant. J’ai punaisé mes deux dessins sur le tableau dans mon couloir, tout en craignant une réaction venant d’en haut. Mais il n’y a pas eu de réaction, sûrement l’envers de la pièce « personne ne te retient ». Au bout de deux semaines, j’ai retiré mes dessins. Ils commençaient à me lasser. Et alors deux copains du couloir m’ont dit « Ah ben non ! Laisse les ! Ils disent ce que nous pensons ! » À quoi j’ai répondu que ma colère était passée et que je ferai deux nouveaux dessins. Et de deux dessins en deux dessins, j’ai dépassé 24 ans et 5000 dessins !
Je viens de les retrouver parce que je suis en train de trier mes papiers en vue d’un déménagement définitif dans mon pays. Et pour les deux tout premiers dessins, je les trouve plutôt réussis !
Before, there was nothing, no paper, no pens, no lines. A Friday of May 1994, if my memory is still correct, I was in a meeting with the section of the company I belonged to at the time. The same company announced, simultaneously, big celebrations for an important anniversary and the suppression of 30% of jobs. It made me really angry. When I told my section head, who was chairing the meeting and who will recognize himself if he reads these lines, that these announcements were not acceptable, he replied, in English : « Gilles, no one holds you here. If you’re not happy, the door is open. » Not happy I certainly was, but I did not leave. In the meeting, I drew the two drawings that I reproduce here. I had never drawn with an humorous trend before. I pinned my two drawings on the board in my corridor, fearing a reaction from above. But there was no reaction, surely the other side of the coin « nobody holds you back ». After two weeks, I removed my cartoons. I was were getting tired of them. And then two friends in the corridor told me, « Oh no, leave them, they say what we think ! » To which I replied that my anger had passed away and that I would make two new cartoons. And two drawings after two drawings, I passed 24 years and 5000 cartoons !
I have just found them because I am sorting out my papers for a final move back to my land. And for the very first two cartoons, I find them rather good !
