I am not a photographer, Eths, but here is what I believe a white balance is. The camera takes the pixel the closest to white and correct the whole colour profile to make it absolutely white. Very often, clean room will give an ugly yellowish or greenish colour. White balance makes the picture much better. As there is always something near to pure white in clean rooms, white balance correction is easy.
